December 2001:
*** REEL *** takes time out for a few word's with "Bob Melendez" of Culture Shock..
1."CS":::Who are your main musical influences?
The harder side of Industrial has always influenced Reel. And it's very difficult to mention some bands, but if we have to we can mention these four: Nerve, Swamp Terrorists, Kong & Young Gods.
2."CS":::Would you consider Reel music more in the vein of old school or new school in sound?
Let's say that we've always strived for good songs. In the old days there were many bands, which made great sounding tracks, but we couldn't here any songs in it. Nowadays with bands as Rammstein that issue is out of the way. So I'll guess were new school then.
3."CS":::Being from The Netherlands what band would you say opened the doors to the industrial/gothic scene there.?
The Dutch band that opened the doors to the industrial gothic scene will be Clan of Xymox. They started somewhere in the early eighties and are still going strong and probably the Americans know them, because they have played several times in the US. While (Clan of) Xymox is more a gothic/wave-like band, the industrial scene hit us in the early 90's, with a gig of Nerve on the legendary TegenTonenFestival in Paradiso, Amsterdam.
4."CS":::About when would you say the Goth/Industrial scene hit your county?
As I mentioned in my previous answer, the early 80's.
5."CS":::Could you describe the scene in your country...
Well, there is a small group of fanatic people busy setting up gigs and parties but that's more in the darkwave style. We have in fact played at one of those parties's and didn't fell out of place, but our style is a little more up then most of the bands they play or let play.
6."CS":::Tell us the member's of Reel's names and what they play...
First of all there's Richard Groot the singer. He writes all lyrics. Then there Fred Lont who does the programming and plays guitar. And last there Peter Degen (aka Neo Land) who also does the programming and presses some keys in live situations.
7."CS":::What is Reel's involvement with band's such as "Haujobb-Noxious Emotion-and Public Enemy"..
Well in fact Reel hasn't nothing to do with Public Enemy. The remixes for PE were done by Neo Land (a nickname for Peter) in a total other style then Industrial. We did however a couple of remixes for Haujobb and Noxious Emotion.
8."CS":::Any plans to tour in the United States? If so when and where???
If we could tour in the US in would be really great. At one point in history we got a support slot offered with "Das Ich", but as we had to pay everything out of our own pocket we rejected that. Too bad after all maybe.
9."CS":::Any new,new's-info or shout out's to anyone???
We took a year off and met each other at a gig of the Young Gods. At that point we decided to make a new album, so shout out to The Young Gods, they made us work together again!! Also thanks to you Bob for all your enthusiasm.
10."CS":::What can we expect from Reel in the near future?
At the moment were busy working on our new CD which will be called "Resurrect" and will be finished early 2002. After that we hope we can do some gigs and maybe this time also abroad.
Thanks alot guy's for taking a time out with us,this is one great band,lable's take notice the US wants REEL!!!!!!
